snippet: This data was produced so as to serve as official record of those Maryland Department of Natural Resources MBSS sites that led to Tier II determinations. This file can be used as a quick reference when wanting to know what MBSS sites and associated IBI scores led to a Tier II stream designation. This is a subset of all MBSS stations. This dataset is intended to be used in conjunction with the other official Tier II MDE datasets: Tier II Stream Segments , Tier II Catchments, and Tier II Stream Endpoints.

description: This dataset consists of a subset of the Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) sites sampled by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Monitoring and Non-tidal Assessment (MANTA) Division. The subset of MBSS stations within this shapefile represents the official list of all Maryland Biological Stream Survey (MBSS) sites sampled that were used for Tier II (high quality) stream segment designations as determined by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE), the regulatory agency responsible for identification and listing of Maryland's Tier II waters. All MBSS sites, including the ones in this subset, were sampled using similar protocols. MBSS sampling locations were generally chosen using a stratified random design with respect to stream order. These stations usually have an '-R-' designation in their site name that stands for 'random'. However, some sites included in this subset have other designations, most notably '-S-' for sentinel sites which are sampled every year for trend analysis and '-A-' sites which were sampled in a targeted fashion specifically for the purpose of identifying additional Tier II stream segments. Other sites included in this subset also include '-C-', '-T-, '-E-', and '-X-' sites that were also sampled using a targeted approach for various purposes. Regardless of the original intent, any MBSS sampling location can be potentially used for Tier II stream designation. At each site in the spring, benthic macroinvertebrates are collected within a 75 meter segment and later identified in a lab. Later, in the summer of the same year (for a single site), fish are collected from the same 75 meter segment and identified onsite. Using the species assemblages collected from these two communities (benthos and fish), a Benthic Index of Biotic Integrity (BIBI) and a Fish Index of Biotic Integrity (FIBI) are calculated. These indices are then used to infer information about local water quality. Thus, these IBIs are also used for Tier II stream segment designation. If the arithmetic mean of all IBIs calculated on a stream segment are greater than or equal to 4.00, then the segment is designated as a Tier II stream segment. This shapefile includes all MBSS sites that were used for Tier II designation up through January of 2010. The MBSS sites themselves were sampled from 1995 - 2009. For more information on MBSS sampling protocols please consult the Round 3 MBSS Sampling manual on the Maryland Department of Natural Resources website at: <http://www.dnr.state.md.us/streams/pubs/ea-07-01b_fieldRevMay2007.pdf>
licenseInfo: This dataset does not represent all of the sites ever sampled in a Tier II stream segment, only the sites that led to the official stream segment designation, as determined by MDE. Users should be aware that comparison with other data sets for the same area may be inaccurate due to inconsistencies resulting from changes in mapping conventions, data collection, and computer processes over time. The data set is not a survey document and should not be utilized as such. Data used in the creation of this tool was from many sources are not perfect. These data are not legal documents and are not to be used as such. Final identification of Tier II waters shall be made based on consulting the regulation COMAR 26.08.02.04-1 and the list of promulgated and pending waters maintained at the website: http://www.mde.state.md.us/ResearchCenter/Data/waterQualityStandards/Antidegradation/index.asp
